The VARGUS 52509 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for internal Whitworth thread cutting on CNC lathes and threading machines. Manufactured in the 3IR style with a 14 threads-per-inch pitch, this insert produces right-hand internal Whitworth threads conforming to B.S.84:1956, DIN 259, and ISO 228/1:1982. The VKX grade carbide substrate receives a PVD-applied TiN coating for improved wear resistance and tool life across a wide range of workpiece materials. With a 9.53 mm inscribed circle and 3.60 mm thickness, the 52509 seats securely in standard 3IR toolholders. Machinists and toolroom technicians working in production or job-shop environments will find this insert suited for consistent thread-form accuracy.
This insert is intended for internal threading operations on workpieces classified across a broad material spectrum, including carbon steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous alloys, heat-resistant superalloys, and hardened materials, corresponding to material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. The Whitworth 55-degree included angle profile makes it applicable to BSW and BSP thread forms as defined by the applicable standards. It is a single-tooth-per-side insert, making it appropriate for single-point threading passes in both production and repair threading applications.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for standard 3IR internal threading toolholders accepting a 9.53 mm inscribed circle laydown insert. Specific toolholder compatibility should be confirmed against the toolholder manufacturer's insert specification chart before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians following the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque and seating procedures. The machine spindle should be brought to a full stop and the toolholder removed or locked out before indexing or replacing the insert. Inspect the insert pocket for chips, debris, or wear before seating the new insert. Never force the insert into the pocket; confirm the insert style, inscribed circle size, and thickness match the toolholder specification before use.
