The VARGUS 52421 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for cutting internal UN threads on CNC lathes and turning centers. Designated 3IR12UN in the VTX grade, it cuts at 12 threads per inch with a 60-degree included angle and carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process. The insert seats in a laydown pocket style holder and is intended for right-hand internal threading operations. It carries an inscribed circle of 3/8 inch (9.53 mm) and a thickness of 3.60 mm. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert during setup or tooling changes on production turning equipment.
This insert is suited for a wide range of workpiece materials, including steels, stainless steels, cast iron, nonferrous alloys, high-temperature alloys, and titanium alloys, as indicated by its universal material compatibility codes. It is appropriate for both job-shop and production environments where standard UN internal threads conforming to ANSI B1.1:74 are required. Typical applications include threading bores, nuts, and internally threaded components on CNC lathes running moderate to high cutting speeds where a hard, wear-resistant PVD coating provides extended tool life.
Designed for use in laydown-style threading toolholders accepting a 3IR insert with a 3/8 inch inscribed circle. Compatible with toolholders configured for right-hand internal UN threading at 12 TPI.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC setup technician with the machine fully stopped and the spindle locked out per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder specification before resuming cuts. Inspect the insert seating surface and pocket for chips or debris before each insert change, as contamination can affect thread form accuracy. Do not exceed the toolholder or machine manufacturer recommended depth of cut or feed rate for threading operations.
