The VARGUS 52347 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for cutting internal NPTF threads on a lathe or CNC turning center. It carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which provides thermal resistance and extended tool life across a wide range of workpiece materials. The insert follows a 3IR style geometry with a 60-degree included angle and cuts at 11.5 threads per inch - the standard pitch for NPTF tapered pipe threads. With an inscribed circle of 9.53 mm (3/8 inch) and a thickness of 3.6 mm, it fits standard 3IR toolholders. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments are the primary users.
This insert is suited for internal tapered pipe thread applications where a pressure-tight, dryseal fit is required without relying on a thread sealant. The NPTF standard, governed by ANSI B1.20.3-1976, demands accurate thread form and is common in hydraulic, pneumatic, and fluid-transfer component machining. The universal primary workpiece material rating - covering material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S - means this insert handles carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous alloys, and high-temperature alloys without a grade change. Right-hand cutting orientation is standard for conventional internal threading passes.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for standard 3IR-style internal threading toolholders. Confirmed compliance with ANSI B1.20.3-1976 and manufactured under ISO 9001:2008 quality standards.
This insert is installed by a machinist or CNC operator into a compatible 3IR internal threading toolholder. Secure the insert with the appropriate torx or clamp screw to the toolholder manufacturer's recommended procedure before engaging the spindle. Confirm correct thread pitch and tool offset in the CNC controller before taking the first pass. Inspect the insert edge for chipping between jobs, as a damaged edge on a tapered thread form will produce out-of-tolerance dryseal fits.
