The VARGUS 51731 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UNJ thread forms at 32 threads per inch (TPI). Manufactured to a 60-degree included angle and finished with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating applied via PVD process, this insert delivers consistent thread geometry and wear resistance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The 3ER insert style features a 9.53 mm (3/8 inch) inscribed circle and a thickness of 3.60 mm. It is intended for right-hand external threading operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The VKX grade designation identifies the carbide substrate and coating combination optimized for universal material compatibility.
This insert is suited for external UNJ thread production in both production machining and maintenance-repair-overhaul (MRO) environments. UNJ thread forms are specified under MIL-S-8879C for aerospace and defense fastener applications, making this insert a common choice for shops producing aerospace-grade threaded components. Compatible workpiece materials span a wide range, including carbon steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous alloys, high-temperature alloys, and titanium, as indicated by universal workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S.
Designed for use in standard 3ER-series laydown threading toolholders. Suitable for external UNJ threading across universal workpiece material categories including carbon steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, high-temperature alloys, and titanium (material codes H, K, M, N, P, S).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is in a safe index position before seating or replacing the insert. Verify toolholder cleanliness and seating pocket condition prior to clamping to maintain thread form accuracy. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidelines for the clamping screw; do not overtighten.
