The VARGUS 51683 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UNJ thread forms at 28 threads per inch (TPI). Built to the 3ER insert style, it carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, providing thermal resistance and extended tool life across a wide range of workpiece materials. The insert measures 9.53 mm inscribed circle (3/8 inch) and 3.60 mm thick. The 60-degree included angle is standard for unified thread profiles. It is intended for use by machinists and CNC lathe operators producing precision external UNJ threads on turned components in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for right-hand external threading operations on a broad range of materials, including steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous alloys, high-temp alloys, and titanium, as reflected by its universal primary workpiece material rating (H, K, M, N, P, S material codes). The VTX grade and TiAlN coating make it applicable in both dry and minimal-lubrication cutting conditions. It is typically used in CNC turning centers and manual lathes equipped with a compatible 3ER toolholder. Production runs requiring consistent thread form accuracy on aerospace or precision mechanical components are a common application.
Designed as a drop-in replacement-style threading insert for 3ER-style laydown insert toolholders used in external UNJ thread turning applications. Specific toolholder compatibility should be confirmed against the 3ER insert style and 9.53 mm inscribed circle specification.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. The machine spindle must be stopped and all axis motion halted before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the insert - do not over-torque the clamp screw. Verify thread form and pitch accuracy with a thread gauge or first-article inspection before committing to a full production run.
