The VARGUS 51660 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread profiles at 27 threads per inch. Manufactured in the VTX grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert delivers wear resistance across a wide range of workpiece materials. The 3ER insert style seats in standard laydown toolholders and produces a 60-degree included angle thread form consistent with ANSI B1.1 unified thread standards. With an inscribed circle of 3/8 inch and a thickness of approximately 0.142 inches, it fits common external threading setups on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shop or production environments are the primary users.
This insert is suited for external threading operations on a broad range of materials, including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum, non-ferrous alloys, and high-temperature alloys as indicated by its universal workpiece material designation. The 3ER style and 27 TPI configuration make it a practical choice for threading operations that require a standard unified coarse or unified fine profile at that pitch. It is appropriate for both light-duty finishing passes and general-purpose threading on CNC turning equipment.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement threading insert for external UN thread applications using standard 3ER laydown insert toolholders. Confirm toolholder pocket dimensions and insert seating style before installation.
This insert is installed and changed by machinists or CNC operators following standard turning center lockout and tool change procedures. Power down and lock out the machine before accessing the turret or toolholder. Use the appropriate torx or clamping screw driver to seat the insert fully and evenly in the pocket without rocking or forcing. Inspect the insert seat and clamping mechanism for wear or debris before seating a new insert to avoid premature edge failure.
