The VARGUS 51623 is a laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread turning operations on CNC lathes and threading machines. Manufactured from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert delivers consistent thread form geometry at 24 threads per inch (TPI) with a 60-degree included angle. The VTX grade is engineered for universal workpiece material compatibility, making it suitable across steel, stainless, aluminum, cast iron, and superalloy applications. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert as a direct replacement in compatible 3ER-style toolholders. The inscribed circle measures 3/8 inch (9.53 mm) and the insert thickness is 3.6 mm.
This insert is used in precision threading operations where a right-hand external UN thread profile is required. It conforms to ANSI B1.1:74 standards, making it appropriate for general-purpose inch-thread production in both production shop and job shop environments. Typical applications include threading fastener blanks, fittings, and shaft ends on bar-fed or chucked workpieces. The universal material code designation covers a broad range of workpiece materials, reducing the need to stock grade-specific inserts for common threading jobs.
Designed for use in 3ER-style laydown threading toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Confirm toolholder seat and clamping style before installation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine in a locked-out, de-energized state per OSHA lockout/tagout procedures. Use the correct torque wrench and clamping screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the insert. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping hardware for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Never run the insert beyond visible wear limits, as chipped carbide can damage the workpiece thread form and toolholder seat.
