The VARGUS 51608 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert engineered for external UNJ thread forms at 24 threads per inch (TPI). Manufactured in the 3ER insert style with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, it carries a TiN (titanium nitride) coating applied via PVD process, which extends cutting edge life across a wide range of workpiece materials. The 60-degree included angle conforms to UNJ thread geometry requirements, making it well-suited for aerospace and high-reliability fastener applications where controlled root radius is specified. Right-hand cutting orientation is standard. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC turning specialists working on threaded components to print dimensions.
The 51608 is used on CNC lathes and turning centers performing external threading operations. The VKX grade and TiN coating support use across universal workpiece material categories, including cast iron, non-ferrous metals, steel, stainless steel, heat-resistant alloys, and non-metallic materials as indicated by material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. Typical applications include threading aerospace fasteners, hydraulic fittings, and precision shaft components where UNJ thread form compliance and root radius control are required by specification.
Designed for use in 3ER-series laydown threading toolholders configured for external UNJ thread turning operations at 24 TPI.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's insert seating and clamping procedures. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the turret is indexed away from the work zone before changing inserts. Verify insert seating and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified value. Confirm thread form and pitch compliance with a thread gauge before running production parts.
