The VARGUS 51369 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for right-hand external UNJ thread cutting at 14 threads per inch. It carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which improves surface hardness and wear resistance across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert features a 60-degree included angle, a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle, and a thickness of 3.60 mm. The VTX grade uses a micrograin carbide substrate, making it well-suited for demanding threading operations where edge stability and tool life are priorities. This insert is installed and used by machinists and tooling technicians in CNC lathe and turning center applications.
This insert is intended for external UNJ thread forms, a thread standard commonly specified in aerospace and defense components per MIL-S-8879C. It is compatible with universal workpiece materials, covering material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S, which span hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, steels, and high-temperature alloys. The 3ER insert style and size code 3 designate its holder compatibility within standard laydown threading toolholder systems. Typical applications include threading aerospace fastener features, hydraulic fittings, and other precision external UNJ thread forms requiring tight tolerance and surface finish.
Designed for use in standard laydown threading toolholders that accept 3ER style inserts with a size code 3 designation. Compatible with CNC lathes and turning centers configured for external threading operations using UNJ thread forms per MIL-S-8879C.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians on CNC turning equipment. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or replacing the insert in the toolholder. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to the toolholder manufacturer's specified seating procedure, and verify insert orientation for right-hand cutting direction before resuming operation. Confirm thread form and TPI against the job drawing before engaging the workpiece.
