The VARGUS 51368 is a laydown threading insert designed for external UNJ thread form cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured from solid carbide with a TiN (titanium nitride) PVD coating, this insert delivers consistent thread form accuracy at 14 threads per inch (TPI) with a 60-degree included angle. The 3ER insert style seats in a standard external laydown toolholder. At 3/8 inch inscribed circle, it is sized for common external threading applications across a wide range of workpiece materials. Machinists and toolroom technicians working to aerospace and precision standards will recognize the UNJ thread form requirement on flight-critical components.
This insert is suited for external UNJ threading operations on turning equipment in production and job-shop environments. The UNJ thread standard, governed by MIL-S-8879C, requires a controlled root radius that reduces stress concentration on threaded fasteners used in aerospace and defense applications. The VKX grade with TiN coating supports cutting across multiple workpiece material groups including steel, stainless, cast iron, non-ferrous, high-temp alloys, and aluminum, as indicated by material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S.
Designed for use in standard 3ER-style laydown external threading toolholders. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and insert seating against your toolholder documentation before ordering.
Install and replace threading inserts with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked. Use the correct torque wrench and insert screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the insert. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination will affect thread form accuracy. Thread-form inserts for UNJ applications should be verified against a thread gauge after the first pass to confirm correct root profile.
