The VARGUS 51339 is a laydown threading insert designed for external NPTF thread cutting on a lathe. Built from solid carbide with a submicron grain material grade, it carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process. The insert produces right-hand external threads at 14 threads per inch (TPI) with a 60-degree included angle and fits toolholders accepting the 3ER insert style. The 3/8-inch inscribed circle (0.375 inches) defines the insert size code 3. This insert is suited for machinists and toolroom technicians working with pipe thread applications where NPTF sealing thread accuracy is required.
The 51339 is intended for lathe-based external threading operations across a broad range of workpiece materials. The VTX grade with TiAlN coating supports use on carbon steels, stainless steels, cast iron, nonferrous alloys, and high-temperature alloys, reflected in the universal primary workpiece material classification covering material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. Typical applications include threading pipe fittings, nipples, and hydraulic connectors to NPTF standards where pressure-tight joints are the goal.
Designed for use in 3ER-style laydown threading toolholders configured for external right-hand NPTF thread cutting. Compatible workpiece material codes include H, K, M, N, P, and S per the universal classification.
Installation of threading inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist with the lathe powered down and the spindle locked before seating or replacing the insert. Use the correct torque wrench and insert clamping screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert without cracking the carbide body. Verify insert seating and clearance angles before resuming cutting operations. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and manufacturer toolholder guidelines when setting up threading operations.
