The VARGUS 51272 is a laydown-style external threading insert designed for precision thread cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured from micrograin solid carbide in the VTX grade, this insert carries a TiAlN PVD coating that extends cutting life across a broad range of workpiece materials. The 3ER insert style produces a 60-degree UNJ thread form at 12 threads per inch on right-hand external profiles. The inscribed circle measures 0.375 inches with a thickness of 3.6 millimeters (approximately 0.142 inches). Licensed machinists and CNC programmers working in aerospace, defense, and precision manufacturing rely on this insert for controlled, repeatable thread form accuracy where MIL-S-8879C compliance is required.
This insert is suited for external UNJ thread turning applications across a wide variety of workpiece materials, including carbon steels, stainless steels, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, high-temperature alloys, and titanium alloys. The universal material grade designation covers material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S, making it appropriate for multi-material production environments. Typical use cases include aerospace fastener threads, hydraulic fittings, and precision shaft threading where UNJ root geometry is specified to reduce fatigue failure risk.
Designed as a laydown threading insert compatible with toolholders accepting the 3ER insert style. Consult the toolholder manufacturer specifications to confirm seat geometry and clamping method before use.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and all axes are in a safe position before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque driver or clamping screw as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert without cracking the carbide substrate. Verify thread form accuracy with thread gauges after first-article cuts before proceeding with production runs.
