The VARGUS 51196 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for cutting external NPTF threads on a lathe or CNC turning center. The insert carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which improves heat resistance and extends edge life during interrupted cuts and continuous threading passes. It produces a 60-degree included angle thread profile at 11.5 threads per inch, matching the NPTF standard used widely in hydraulic and pneumatic pipe fittings. The 3ER insert style seats in a standard laydown toolholder. This insert is installed and replaced by machinists and toolroom technicians working in job shops, maintenance facilities, and production turning operations.
This insert is suited for external NPTF thread turning applications where a pressure-tight, dry-seal pipe thread form is required. Typical use cases include threading pipe nipples, fittings, and hydraulic adapters in steel and similar machinable materials. The VTX grade designation indicates a carbide substrate and coating combination optimized for threading applications in ferrous and general-purpose materials. The right-hand configuration covers the majority of standard pipe thread applications encountered in production and repair environments.
Designed for use in standard 3ER-style laydown threading toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Suitable for external NPTF thread turning operations on compatible CNC and manual lathes.
This insert is seated and torqued by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician following the toolholder manufacturer's seating procedure. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Do not exceed the toolholder manufacturer's recommended clamping torque for this insert size.
