The VARGUS 51142 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread cutting at 10 threads per inch (TPI). It carries the VKX manufacturer grade and features a PVD-applied TiN (titanium nitride) coating for extended tool life and reduced friction during the threading pass. The insert uses a 3ER style geometry with a 60-degree included angle and a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle. Thickness is 3.6 mm. It is a right-hand insert intended for use on CNC lathes and turning centers where repeatable, high-accuracy external thread profiles are required. Machinists and toolroom professionals working to ANSI B1.1:74 UN thread standards will find this insert sized and graded for consistent results across a broad range of workpiece materials.
The VARGUS 51142 is suited for external threading operations on a wide range of workpiece materials, including steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous metals, high-temperature alloys, and titanium alloys, as indicated by material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. It is classed as a universal-primary-material insert, making it a practical stock choice in job shops and production environments where multiple material types cycle through the same turning setup. The 3ER style is a standard laydown form compatible with commonly available threading toolholders in that insert-style family.
Designed as an OEM-style threading insert for use in standard 3ER-style laydown threading toolholders producing right-hand external UN threads at 10 TPI.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists during toolholder setup on CNC or manual turning equipment. Power down and lock out the spindle before seating or removing the insert. Use the correct torx or hex key specified for the toolholder clamp screw and do not overtighten, as solid carbide inserts are brittle and can crack under uneven clamping force. Verify insert seating and shim condition before engaging the workpiece.
