The VARGUS 50990 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external partial-profile threading on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured in the 3ER insert style with a VKX micrograin carbide grade, it carries a PVD-applied TiN coating for enhanced wear resistance and extended tool life. The insert covers a thread pitch range of 14 to 8 TPI (1.75 to 3.00 mm pitch) and is ground to a 60-degree included angle, making it suitable for unified and metric 60-degree thread forms. Machinists and toolroom technicians working in production or job-shop environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is suited for right-hand external threading operations across a wide range of workpiece materials. The universal primary workpiece material rating covers material groups H, K, M, N, P, and S, spanning steel, stainless, cast iron, non-ferrous, and heat-resistant alloys. It is a standard-series insert intended for high-volume threading passes on part diameters where a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle toolholder pocket is specified. Typical applications include threading hydraulic fittings, fasteners, shafts, and similar cylindrical components on manual or CNC turning equipment.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for 3ER-style laydown threading insert pockets requiring a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle and 3.60 mm insert thickness. Consult toolholder documentation to confirm pocket style and clamping compatibility before installation.
Threading inserts of this type are installed and indexed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer - do not over-tighten the clamping screw, as this can fracture the carbide substrate. Inspect the pocket seat and clamping surfaces for chips or debris before seating the new insert.
