The VARGUS 50420 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for right-hand internal NPT thread cutting at 18 threads per inch (TPI). The insert uses the 2IR style geometry with a 60-degree included angle, making it suited for generating tapered pipe thread profiles on a CNC or manual lathe. A TiN (titanium nitride) PVD coating improves wear resistance and tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. With an inscribed circle of 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) and a thickness of 3.17 mm, this insert seats in compatible 2IR-style toolholders without shimming. Machinists and tool-room operators who need consistent, on-spec internal pipe threads rely on this insert for production and job-shop applications alike.
This insert is applied in internal threading operations where NPT tapered pipe thread profiles are required. It is rated for universal workpiece material compatibility, covering common material groups including steels, stainless steels, cast irons, non-ferrous alloys, high-temperature alloys, and titanium. Typical install scenarios include threading bores in hydraulic fittings, pipe couplings, valve bodies, and manifold blocks. Both production shops and MRO machining environments use this insert where repeatable pipe-thread quality is critical.
Designed for use in 2IR-style internal threading toolholders. Compatible workpiece material groups include H, K, M, N, P, and S per ISO designation. Conforms to USAS B2.1:1968 NPT thread standard.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification before cutting. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Do not exceed the cutting parameters published by VARGUS for this grade and coating - running outside recommended feeds and speeds will reduce tool life and compromise thread accuracy.
