The VALUE COLLECTION MSC-04912176 is a 3/8-16 UNC bottoming hand tap ground from high speed steel and finished bright uncoated. It is designed for cutting fully formed internal threads to the bottom of blind holes where standard plug or taper taps cannot reach. The bottoming chamfer leaves only 1 to 2 threads of lead, making it suited for through-thread finishing as well. Four straight flutes provide chip clearance and stable cutting geometry. This tap is threaded left hand, meaning it cuts when rotated counterclockwise, and carries a 3B class of fit with an H3 thread limit for standard tolerance threaded assemblies.
This tap is used in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and field repair applications wherever a 3/8-16 UNC left-hand thread is required. Left-hand taps are commonly specified for locking fastener applications, counter-rotation spindles, and repair of damaged left-hand threaded bores. It is driven by hand with a tap wrench and is appropriate for use in steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar machinable materials. Machinists, tool and die technicians, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users.
Designed as a standard replacement or supplemental hand tap for any application requiring a 3/8-16 UNC left-hand thread in a bottoming configuration.
This tap is installed using a standard tap wrench sized for the tap square. Secure the workpiece before tapping and apply cutting fluid to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Back the tap out periodically to break chips, especially in deep blind holes. Left-hand taps require counterclockwise rotation to cut — verify thread direction before use to avoid tool breakage.
