The VALUE COLLECTION 429-38251 is a manual, self-centering lathe chuck designed for use on metalworking lathes in machine shop and production environments. The chuck measures 8 inches in diameter with a plain back mount and a cast iron body, giving it the rigidity and mass needed for stable workholding. It features three reversible, two-piece jaws with a through-hole diameter of 2.264 inches, allowing bar stock to pass through the spindle. Total indicated runout (TIR) repeatability is rated at 0.013 millimeters, supporting consistent part concentricity across setups. Machinists and tool and die professionals are the primary installers and operators of this chuck.
This chuck suits manual lathe operations in both job shop and maintenance machining environments. The self-centering jaw action speeds up workholding setup when chucking round or hex stock. The reversible two-piece jaws extend the gripping range, accommodating both small-diameter and larger-diameter workpieces without a jaw change. The plain back mount requires the user to fit and register the chuck to a matching backplate machined to the lathe spindle nose specification. It is suited for general turning, facing, and drilling operations on a manual engine lathe.
Designed as an OEM-style manual lathe chuck replacement or upgrade for engine lathes accepting a plain back chuck mount with a matching backplate bored to the lathe spindle nose specification.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or machine tool technician. Before mounting or removing the chuck, the lathe must be powered down, locked out, and the spindle brought to a full stop. The plain back requires a properly machined backplate registered to the lathe spindle nose before the chuck can be fitted. Verify jaw seating and runout with a test indicator after mounting before commencing any cutting operation.
