The VALUE COLLECTION -22590-2 is a hand STI (Screw Thread Insert) tap designed to cut 10-24 UNC threads for installation of helical thread inserts in stripped or damaged threaded bores. Built from high speed steel with a bright finish, this tap features an H2 thread limit and a plug chamfer that provides a gradual lead-in for controlled hand tapping in through-holes or moderately deep blind holes. The 3-flute design offers a balance of chip clearance and thread-form support. Overall length is 2.5 inches with a 1-inch thread length. Used by machinists, maintenance technicians, and field service professionals performing thread repair.
This tap is suited for thread repair and insert preparation in metalworking, MRO, and industrial maintenance applications. It is used to cut the oversized pilot thread required before installing a helical coil insert (such as a Helicoil-style insert) to restore a 10-24 UNC thread to its original specification. Typical applications include repair of stripped threads in aluminum, steel, and cast iron components encountered in HVAC equipment, machinery, and mechanical assemblies. The plug chamfer style makes it appropriate for through-holes and accessible blind holes where threading can begin with standard hand tap wrench tooling.
Designed for use as an STI hand tap to prepare threads for helical coil thread inserts in 10-24 UNC applications. Helicoil reference number 3CPB. Compatible with standard hand tap wrenches and T-handle tap holders.
This tap is installed by hand using a tap wrench — power driving is not recommended for hand taps of this size. Ensure the workpiece is secured before tapping and apply cutting fluid appropriate to the base material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Back the tap off periodically to break chips and prevent binding. Follow applicable shop safety practices and relevant maintenance code requirements for the equipment being repaired.
