The VALUE COLLECTION -20870-X is a Letter X mechanics drill bit engineered for general-purpose metal drilling in demanding shop and field environments. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide finish, it measures 0.3970 inches in diameter and delivers consistent performance through a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on entry and lowers feed force. The Weldon flat shank with three flats provides positive drive engagement and prevents bit rotation in compatible chucks. Right-hand spiral flutes evacuate chips efficiently, making this bit a reliable choice for machinists, maintenance technicians, and metalworking professionals.
This mechanics-length drill bit is suited for drilling carbon steel, cast iron, high alloy steel, high tensile strength alloys, stainless steel, and similar ferrous materials. The shorter mechanics-length body improves rigidity in tight clearance applications and on drill presses, lathes, and milling setups where a jobber-length bit would flex or deflect. The web-thinned, parallel web configuration further reduces thrust requirements when working through harder stock.
Designed as a general-purpose mechanics-length drill bit compatible with Weldon flat chuck holders and collet systems accepting a Weldon shank. Suitable for use in drill presses, lathes, milling machines, and hand drills equipped with a compatible chuck. Intended for drilling carbon steel, cast iron, high alloy steel, high tensile strength alloys, and stainless steel workpieces.
Secure the Weldon flat shank firmly in a compatible chuck or holder before operation, confirming all set screws engage a flat. Always wear appropriate eye protection and follow applicable shop safety procedures. Reduce spindle speed and increase feed pressure when drilling stainless steel or high alloy materials to prevent work hardening. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use and redress or replace the bit as needed to maintain hole quality.
