The TUNGALOY 6850160 is a CNMA543 T5105 grade solid carbide turning insert designed for high-productivity metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN for elevated wear resistance and thermal stability. The 80-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code C) provides a strong cutting edge geometry with a 0-degree rake angle and a honed cutting edge, making it well suited to interrupted cuts and hard-to-machine ferrous materials. With 4 usable cutting edges per insert and compatibility with both clamp and pin holding methods, this insert delivers consistent tool life in demanding production environments. Licensed HVAC and trade professionals working with CNC machining will recognize the value of a well-engineered insert grade built for cast iron.
This insert is intended for turning, facing, and boring operations on cast iron workpieces, corresponding to ISO material group K (K05 and K15). The CNMA543 profile - 5/8 inch inscribed circle, 1/4 inch thickness, and 3/64 inch corner radius - fits standard CNMA-style toolholders used in general-purpose and heavy-duty turning applications. The flat-top chip breaker and negative rake geometry are optimized for continuous and semi-interrupted cuts at moderate to high feed rates. A maximum depth of cut of 0.0787 inches supports finishing and semi-finishing passes. This insert conforms to ANSI and ISO standards for interchangeability across compatible toolholder systems.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for CNMA 543-style indexable toolholders accepting inserts with a 5/8 inch inscribed circle, 1/4 inch thickness, and clamp or pin retention. Intended for primary use on cast iron workpieces in turning, facing, and boring operations.
Installation is performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamp hardware when seating the insert to avoid micro-fracturing the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before each insert change.
