The TUNGALOY 6741708 is a VNMG331 HRF series turning insert manufactured from solid carbide and coated with TiAlN via a PVD process. It features a 35-degree diamond insert shape with a neutral hand orientation and a honed cutting edge style. The insert carries a 0.0157-inch (1/64 inch) corner radius and an inscribed circle diameter of 0.375 inches. With four usable cutting edges and a negative rake angle of -20 degrees, it is designed for productive material removal in precision turning operations. Machinists and CNC lathe operators working in job shops and production environments install this insert on compatible toolholders using clamp and pin holding methods.
This insert is suited for a wide range of workpiece materials including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials. It carries material grade designations M10, M20, S10, and S20, making it applicable across ISO material groups P, M, K, N, S, and H. Typical applications include turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring. The HRF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and medium cuts on these diverse material types. It is well-matched to production CNC turning centers and manual lathes where consistent chip control is required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-fit insert for VNMG-style toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO insert standards. The insert size code is 331 and the ISO designation is VNMG 331 HRF.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is stopped and all axes are at a safe position before changing inserts. Secure the insert using the designated clamp and pin holding method specified for the toolholder; do not substitute fasteners. Verify seating and torque the clamp screw according to the toolholder manufacturer's specification before resuming cuts.
