The THOMAS BETTS E940D is a polyvinylchloride (PVC) conduit coupling designed for joining rigid PVC conduit in a single continuous run. The fitting uses a solvent-cement (glued) connection method to create a secure, insulated joint rated for non-hazardous area installations. It is sized for 1/2 inch trade size conduit, making it one of the most common couplings in residential and light commercial electrical work. Electricians install this fitting during conduit rough-in to extend conduit runs or repair sections where a continuous length is not practical. The insulated PVC construction eliminates the need for additional bonding at the coupling point in standard installations.
This coupling is used in rigid PVC conduit systems installed in residential, commercial, and light industrial environments where non-hazardous area classification applies. Typical install scenarios include underground conduit runs, exposed exterior raceways, and wet or damp indoor locations where PVC is preferred over metallic conduit. The glued connection method is standard for Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 rigid PVC conduit systems.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement fitting for 1/2 inch trade size rigid PVC conduit systems in non-hazardous area installations.
Installation is performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with NEC Article 352 governing rigid PVC conduit. De-energize all circuits in the affected raceway before cutting or joining conduit. Use the appropriate PVC solvent cement and primer for the conduit schedule and ambient temperature range — do not dry-fit and leave unglued. Allow full cure time per the solvent cement manufacturer instructions before pulling wire.
