The THOMAS BETTS CDOW is a single-gang steel electrical switch box designed for old construction retrofit installations. It provides a secure, code-ready housing for standard wall switches and receptacles in residential and light commercial wiring applications. The box measures 3 inches in height, 2 inches in width, and 2.5 inches in depth, making it compatible with standard single-gang cutout openings. A galvanized steel finish resists corrosion in typical indoor environments. Six pre-scored 0.5-inch knockouts provide flexible conduit or cable entry from multiple directions. UL listed under File E2969, confirming compliance with recognized safety standards for electrical enclosures.
This switch box is suited for retrofit and remodel work where new-work brackets are not practical. The old construction mount style allows installation into existing finished walls without removing drywall or plaster. Electricians use this box when replacing damaged boxes, adding outlets or switches in existing walls, or completing renovation projects where the framing is not exposed. The single-gang configuration accommodates one device, such as a toggle switch, decorator-style switch, or duplex receptacle with a standard cover plate.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or new-install switch box for single-gang old construction electrical rough-in applications using standard 0.5-inch trade-size conduit or NM cable entries.
Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) and applicable local codes. Always de-energize the circuit at the breaker panel and verify absence of voltage with a meter before working inside the box. Old construction mounting ears or wings must seat firmly against the interior wall surface to meet code requirements for secure box mounting. Do not exceed the box fill calculations specified in NEC Article 314 for conductors, devices, and fittings installed inside this enclosure.
