The THOMAS BETTS 4H is a hex split bolt connector designed for making reliable tap and splice connections in copper wire installations. Built from copper alloy with a copper alloy pressure bar, this connector accommodates wire sizes from 8 to 4 AWG. The split bolt design allows a main wire and a tap wire to be secured under a single fastener, creating a low-resistance mechanical connection. Overall length is 1-1/16 inches, head width is 17/32 inches, and base width is 23/32 inches. Licensed electricians and journeymen installers use this type of connector in service entrance work, feeder taps, and branch circuit splices.
This connector is suited for residential and commercial electrical applications where copper-to-copper wire connections are required. It is commonly installed in junction boxes, pull boxes, and service entrance enclosures. The 8 to 4 AWG range covers typical feeder and sub-feeder conductor sizes encountered in panel work, meter socket connections, and tap conductor assemblies.

Installation should be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) requirements for mechanical connectors. De-energize and lock out the circuit before making any connections. Strip conductors to the appropriate length, seat both wires fully into the split bolt, and tighten the hex nut to the connector manufacturer's specified torque using a calibrated torque wrench or nut driver. Wrap completed connections with listed electrical tape or approved insulating covers where required by code.
