The SUMITOMO U103818 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-productivity hole-making in demanding production environments. It accepts the SMDT07344MTL-C replaceable carbide tip, which carries a dual-layer TiAlCr and TiSi PVD coating applied through a physical vapor deposition process. The 140-degree included point angle and MTL-C insert geometry are optimized for entry stability and chip control when drilling cast iron and steel. Through-coolant capability supports higher cutting speeds and extended tool life in deep-hole applications. This drill is a component of the SMD modular system, intended for use by machinists and CNC tooling specialists in precision machining operations.
The U103818 body is suited for use in CNC machining centers running cast iron and steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material groups K and P. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost compared to solid carbide drills by allowing tip replacement without discarding the drill body. The 47/64-inch diameter and SMD series configuration make it appropriate for production drilling applications where consistent hole quality and cycle time are priorities. Through-coolant delivery directly to the cutting edge supports chip evacuation in blind and through-hole operations.
Designed for use with the SMDT07344MTL-C ACX70 replaceable carbide tip as part of the SMD series modular drill system. Compatible workpiece materials include cast iron (ISO K) and steel (ISO P).
Installation and tip changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician following the machine tool manufacturer lockout and energy isolation procedures before any tool change. Ensure the replaceable tip is seated fully and secured according to the SMD series assembly procedure before spindle operation. Inspect the drill body bore and seating surfaces for wear or contamination prior to tip installation. Verify through-coolant connections are clear and delivering adequate flow before commencing any drilling cycle.
