The SUMITOMO U103697 is a jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance metal cutting in demanding industrial and machining applications. Built from solid carbide and coated with a dual TiAlCr and TiSi finish, this bit delivers extended tool life and heat resistance when drilling through hard and abrasive workpiece materials. It features a 135-degree split-point tip that reduces walking and allows faster penetration without a center punch. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 0.2344 inches in diameter, matching the drill diameter for direct chuck mounting. Overall length is 3.937 inches, with a flute length of 1.8898 inches and a 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio suited to moderate-depth holes.
This drill bit is engineered for cutting cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, and other ferrous and high-temperature alloys. The coolant-through design allows internal coolant delivery directly to the cutting zone, making it well suited for CNC machining centers and other setups with through-spindle coolant capability. It is part of the MDW-HGS series, which targets production environments where tool consistency, chip evacuation, and coating durability are critical. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals working on tight-tolerance work will find the h8 diameter tolerance appropriate for precision bore applications.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and drill presses equipped for metal cutting. Rated for primary workpiece material codes K, M, P, and S, covering cast iron, stainless steel, carbon steel, and high-temperature alloys. Coolant-through use requires a spindle or toolholder with internal coolant passage.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tool-setup personnel. Secure the straight-cylindrical shank in a compatible collet, drill chuck, or hydraulic toolholder rated for the shank diameter before use. Power down the spindle and confirm zero RPM before changing or inspecting the bit. Avoid using coolant-through bores dry on extended cuts, as this reduces cooling efficiency and may shorten tool life.
