The SUMITOMO U103480 is an uncoated ceramic turning insert in the TPG432-NB90S grade, designed for single-point turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. It features a triangular insert shape with a 60-degree included angle, a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.125-inch thickness. The corner radius measures 0.0313 inches (1/32 inch). Manufactured in the NB90S ceramic grade without coating, this insert delivers a bright, uncoated cutting surface suited to high-speed, dry machining of cast iron. It is held by clamp and carries a positive rake geometry with an 11-degree relief angle. Machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments are the primary users of this insert.
This insert is primarily intended for turning cast iron workpieces. The uncoated ceramic construction performs at elevated cutting speeds where coated carbide inserts may be less effective. Typical applications include finishing and semi-finishing passes on gray cast iron, ductile iron, and similar K-group workpiece materials. The positive rake angle helps reduce cutting forces, which is beneficial when machining components where deflection is a concern. The clamp-style holding method provides rigid seating in compatible toolholders designed for TPG or TPGN-style inserts.
Designed for use in toolholders that accept TPG or TPGN-style triangular turning inserts with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle. ISO code TPGN220408 identifies the insert geometry for cross-referencing with compatible toolholder systems. Verify toolholder seat dimensions and clamp style before installation.
This insert is installed by a machinist or CNC operator in a clamp-style turning toolholder. Power down and lock out the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Use proper insert-handling tools or gloves to avoid contact with ceramic cutting edges, which are brittle and can chip under impact. Confirm seating of the insert in the pocket before resuming cutting operations.
