The SUMITOMO U101738 is an indexable turning toolholder in the MWLNR163D style, designed for right-hand cutting operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. It uses a clamp-and-pin insert holding method to secure WNMG 332 series inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and 0.1875-inch thickness. The toolholder features a 1 x 1 inch square shank and an overall length of 6 inches, making it a standard fit for tool turrets and holders in that size class. A negative rake angle of -5 degrees is built into the geometry, optimizing chip formation for undercutting applications. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working across a wide range of workpiece materials will find this holder a reliable production-floor choice.
This toolholder is suited for undercutting operations on a broad range of workpiece materials, including ferrous metals, non-ferrous alloys, stainless steels, superalloys, and general-purpose materials as indicated by material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. The MWLN toolholder style is commonly deployed in production turning environments where consistent insert indexing and rigid clamping are required. The clamp-and-pin retention system provides added security during interrupted cuts and at higher feed rates. The 1.25-inch head length and 1-inch back-of-bar to cutting-edge measurement support precise positioning in tight-clearance setups.
Designed for use with WNMG 332 series inserts with a compatible insert size code of WN33 and a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. Part of the Multi-Option series. Coolant-through is not supported on this holder.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and all axis motion is locked out before changing toolholders or indexing inserts. Verify that the insert pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating a new insert. Follow the machine tool manufacturer's torque specifications for clamping screws, as the toolholder does not carry its own published torque value.
