The SUMITOMO U101406 is a carbide replaceable tip drill from the SMD series, designed for high-productivity drilling in ferrous materials. It carries the ACX70 manufacturer grade and features a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi dual-layer coating that supports extended tool life under demanding cutting conditions. The drill body accepts the MTL-C insert geometry tip and delivers through-coolant capability to maintain chip evacuation and thermal control at the cutting zone. A 140-degree included point angle geometry supports stable entry and reduced thrust force in both cast iron and steel workpieces. This drill is installed and operated by machinists and tooling technicians in CNC machining center environments.
The U101406 is suited for production drilling operations in ferrous materials, specifically cast iron and steel. The replaceable tip design reduces downtime by allowing tip indexing without removing the drill body from the machine spindle. Through-coolant delivery makes this drill appropriate for deeper hole applications where chip packing and heat accumulation are concerns. Typical applications include automotive component machining, general metalworking, and high-volume part production where consistent hole quality and tool economy are priorities.
Designed as an OEM-style replaceable tip drill within the SUMITOMO SMD series platform. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron (ISO material code K) and steel (ISO material code P).
Installation and tip changes should be performed by qualified machine tool operators or tooling technicians. Remove power from the spindle and confirm the machine is in a safe state before indexing or replacing the carbide tip. Use the appropriate torque wrench and manufacturer-specified tooling hardware when seating the replaceable tip to ensure correct clamping force. Verify through-coolant supply pressure and flow prior to operation to confirm unobstructed delivery to the cutting edge.
