The SUMITOMO U101383 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-performance hole-making in steel and ferrous workpiece materials. It features a 1-7/64 inch cutting diameter and a 140-degree included point angle, providing a geometry suited for accurate entry and efficient chip formation. The MTL insert geometry and ACX70 manufacturer grade carbide tip deliver wear resistance in demanding production environments. A dual-layer TiAlCr and TiSi PVD coating extends tool life by reducing heat buildup and surface friction at the cutting edge. This drill is intended for CNC machining centers where through-spindle coolant is available, making it a fit for high-feed, high-volume drilling operations across manufacturing and metalworking shops.
The U101383 is designed for primary use in steel cutting applications, classified under workpiece material code P. It is well-suited for production machining environments running tight-tolerance through-holes or blind holes in carbon steel, alloy steel, and similar ferrous materials. The replaceable tip design allows the carbide insert to be swapped at the machine without discarding the full drill body, reducing tooling cost per hole in high-cycle operations. This drill is typically installed and changed out by CNC machinists and tooling technicians in job shops, tier-one suppliers, and production facilities.
Designed as an OEM-style replaceable tip for use within the Sumitomo SMD series drill body system. Specific body compatibility should be confirmed against the SMD series drill body selection guide using the 1-7/64 inch diameter specification.
Installation and tip changes should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or tooling technician with the machine in a full stop, locked-out state. Ensure the drill body seat and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the replaceable tip. Confirm through-coolant pressure settings are appropriate for the drill diameter and application before resuming operation. Follow the machine tool manufacturer and tooling system guidelines for proper torque on the tip clamping mechanism.
