The SUMITOMO U101380 is a replaceable drill tip designed for use in modular indexable drill systems. Manufactured from solid carbide and finished with a dual TiAlCr and TiSi coating, this tip delivers wear resistance and thermal stability during high-speed drilling operations. It carries the ACX70 grade designation and features a 140-degree included angle with an MTL insert geometry. Internal coolant-through channels direct cutting fluid to the cutting edge, supporting chip evacuation and heat control. The tip is part of the SMD series and is intended for installation by machinists and tool-room technicians working with precision drilling applications.
This replaceable drill tip is engineered for drilling in steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material group P. The SMD series modular design allows the tip to be swapped without replacing the full drill body, reducing tooling costs in production environments. Typical applications include through-hole and blind-hole drilling in ferrous materials across general machining, job shop, and manufacturing settings. The coolant-through design makes it well suited for deeper holes where chip packing and heat buildup are concerns.
Designed as an OEM-style replaceable tip for use with SUMITOMO SMD series modular drill bodies accepting the MTL geometry in the 1.0625 inch cutting diameter.
Installation of replaceable drill tips should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle and machine fully powered down and locked out. Seat the tip fully into the drill body pocket and secure it according to the tool manufacturer torque sequence before mounting the assembly in the spindle. Inspect the seating surface for chips or debris before each tip change, as contamination at the interface can cause runout. Handle carbide tips with care to avoid chipping the cutting edge during installation.
