The SUMITOMO U101375 is a carbide replaceable tip drill designed for high-productivity hole-making in steel and similar ferrous workpiece materials. Part of the SMD series, this drill uses an MTL insert geometry and carries an ACX70 grade designation, indicating a tough carbide substrate engineered for demanding cutting conditions. The TiAlCr and TiSi multilayer coating is applied via PVD process, providing thermal resistance and edge hardness at elevated cutting speeds. Cutting diameter is 0.9844 inches with a 140-degree included angle on the tip. Through-coolant delivery keeps the cutting edge cool and evacuates chips from deep bores, extending tool life on production runs.
The U101375 is suited for drilling operations in steel in CNC machining centers and turning centers where consistent hole quality and fast cycle times are priorities. The replaceable tip design allows the cutting head to be swapped without discarding the drill body, reducing tooling cost per hole on repeat production work. This configuration is commonly used in job shops and manufacturing facilities running medium-to-high volume parts in P-class workpiece materials per ISO material classification.
Designed as an OEM-style replaceable tip for use with compatible SUMITOMO SMD series drill bodies accepting the MTL tip geometry in the corresponding cutting diameter.
Installation of replaceable tip drills should be performed by a qualified machinist following the drill body manufacturer's torque and seating procedure for the tip interface. Ensure the drill body bore and tip seating surfaces are clean and free of chips or burrs before inserting the tip. Confirm through-coolant passages are clear and that coolant pressure meets the minimum specification for the drill body in use. Verify spindle runout is within acceptable tolerance before commencing drilling to avoid premature tip wear or breakage.
