The SUMITOMO U101372 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-performance hole-making in steel and ferrous workpiece materials. This drill features a solid carbide tip with a TiAlCr and TiSi PVD coating applied through the MTL insert geometry process, delivering extended tool life in demanding production environments. The 140-degree included point angle is optimized for entering steel without walking, and the through-coolant design channels cutting fluid directly to the tip to control heat and evacuate chips efficiently. Machinists and tooling professionals working in CNC turning and machining centers are the primary users of this drill body and tip system.
The U101372 is suited for drilling steel (ISO material group P) in both roughing and semi-finish applications. The SMD replaceable tip platform allows the tip to be swapped without replacing the entire drill body, reducing tooling cost per hole in high-volume production. Typical install scenarios include vertical and horizontal machining centers running steel structural components, shafts, and flanges where through-coolant capability is required to maintain hole quality and prevent built-up edge on the cutting tip.
Designed as an OEM-style replaceable tip for the SUMITOMO SMD series drill body platform in applications targeting steel and ferrous workpiece materials.
Installation of replaceable tip drills should be performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians with the machine spindle fully stopped and locked out per facility LOTO procedures. The carbide tip must be seated and torqued to the drill body using the manufacturer-specified torque key — do not substitute with standard hex keys. Inspect the tip seat for chips or debris before seating a new tip, as contamination will cause runout and premature tip failure. Through-coolant connections should be verified at the spindle interface before resuming operation.
