The SUMITOMO U101365 is a carbide replaceable-tip drill designed for high-performance metal cutting in production machining environments. Built to the SMD Series platform, this drill accepts a solid carbide tip with MTL insert geometry and is finished with a TiAlCr and TiSi PVD coating applied via physical vapor deposition. The coating provides thermal resistance and wear protection during demanding steel cutting operations. The included angle measures 140 degrees, and the drill diameter is 27/32 inches. Through-coolant capability allows cutting fluid to be delivered directly to the cutting edge, reducing heat buildup and improving chip evacuation in deep-hole applications.
This drill is engineered for machining primary workpiece materials classified under ISO code P, which covers carbon steels, alloy steels, and ferritic stainless steels. The ACX70 grade designation indicates a substrate and coating combination optimized for steel. Typical applications include high-volume drilling on CNC machining centers where tool change time is minimized by swapping only the carbide tip rather than the full drill body. The replaceable-tip design reduces tooling cost per hole while maintaining consistent geometry across tip changes.
Designed as a replaceable carbide tip for use with compatible SMD Series drill bodies in the SUMITOMO SMD platform. Tip geometry and interface are specific to the SMD Series body system.
Installation and tip changes should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before removing or installing the carbide tip. The tip interface should be clean and free of chips or debris before seating to maintain runout accuracy. Consult the SMD Series assembly instructions for correct torque procedure and seating confirmation before beginning a cut.
