The SUMITOMO U101361 is a carbide replaceable tip drill designed for precision hole-making in cast iron and steel. It features a 140-degree point angle, a 51/64-inch diameter, and a DEX coating finish applied to improve wear resistance and surface quality. The tip is manufactured from solid carbide in the ACX70 grade, which is suited to high-productivity drilling applications. Through-coolant capability directs cutting fluid directly to the cutting zone, helping manage heat and chip evacuation. The MTL-C insert geometry is engineered for stable entry and consistent hole quality in ferrous materials. This tool is installed and operated by machinists and CNC tooling specialists in production and job-shop environments.
The U101361 is used in drilling operations targeting cast iron and steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material codes K and P. It is well suited to CNC machining centers where through-coolant is available at the spindle. The SMD series replaceable tip design allows the carbide tip to be swapped without replacing the full drill body, reducing tooling cost per hole in high-volume production. Typical applications include structural components, engine blocks, housings, and other precision-machined ferrous parts where hole diameter consistency and surface finish are critical.
Designed as a replaceable tip for use in compatible SUMITOMO SMD series drill bodies accepting the MTL-C tip geometry. Intended for machining cast iron and steel workpieces in CNC machining center applications with through-spindle coolant capability.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer guidelines for replaceable tip drills. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before seating or removing the carbide tip. Use the correct torque wrench or driver as specified by the drill body manufacturer to secure the tip without over-torquing. Confirm through-coolant pressure settings are appropriate for the material and feed rate before running the first hole.
