The SUMITOMO U101346 is a carbide replaceable tip drill engineered for precision metal removal in demanding machining applications. Built around the SMD series platform, this drill accepts an MTL-geometry insert tip and features a TiAlCr and TiSi dual-coating finish that extends tool life when cutting steel and other ferrous workpiece materials. The 140-degree included point angle promotes stable entry and reduces thrust force at cut initiation. Through-coolant capability delivers fluid directly to the cutting zone, controlling chip evacuation and heat at depth. The drill body carries a nominal diameter of 21/32 inches and is rated for the ACX70 manufacturer grade, indicating high-hardness carbide substrate suited to the P-class workpiece material category.
This replaceable tip drill is intended for production-environment machining of steel workpieces in CNC machining centers and turning centers equipped with internal coolant supply. The SMD series is a common choice for job shops and OEM manufacturers running moderate-to-high spindle speeds on low-alloy, carbon, and mild stainless steels. The replaceable tip design reduces tooling cost per hole by allowing the carbide tip to be swapped without discarding the steel shank body. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary installers of this tooling.
Designed for use within the SUMITOMO SMD series replaceable tip drill system with MTL insert geometry. Compatible workpiece material classification is P-class steel per ISO turning insert material code standards.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians with the machine spindle fully stopped and the machine placed in a safe, locked-out state. Ensure the drill shank and toolholder bore are clean and free of chips before seating the body. Follow the machine tool and toolholder manufacturer torque guidance when clamping the shank. Verify through-coolant passages are clear and that coolant pressure meets the minimum required by the toolholder system before running at depth.
