The SUMITOMO U101332 is a carbide replaceable tip drill in the SMD series, designed for high-performance hole-making in steel and similar ferrous workpiece materials. It features a 17/32-inch diameter and a 140-degree included point angle. The cutting tip is manufactured from solid carbide with an ACX70 grade and a PVD-applied TiAlCr and TiSi multilayer coating, designated by the MTL insert geometry code. Through-coolant capability is built in, allowing pressurized coolant delivery directly to the cutting edge for heat control and chip evacuation. This drill is installed and operated by machinists and CNC tooling professionals in production and job-shop environments.
The U101332 is suited for drilling operations in steel workpieces where tool life, hole quality, and process consistency are the primary concerns. The SMD series replaceable tip design allows the carbide tip to be swapped without replacing the drill body, reducing tooling cost per hole in high-volume runs. Through-coolant support makes it well-suited for deeper holes where chip packing and thermal buildup are common failure points. Typical applications include CNC machining centers and drill presses running steel components in automotive, general manufacturing, and metalworking contexts.
Designed as a replaceable tip for SMD series drill bodies compatible with the ACX70 carbide tip specification and MTL insert geometry. Verify body bore size and tip seating interface against the SMD series selection guide before ordering.
Installation of the replaceable carbide tip should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer torque and seating procedure for SMD series tips. Ensure the machine spindle and coolant supply are fully shut down and locked out before tip removal or installation. Do not use worn or damaged tip seats, as improper seating will compromise runout and tool life. Confirm through-coolant port alignment and pressure rating of the machine coolant system before initiating a cut.
