The SUMITOMO U101206 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance metal cutting applications. It measures 9/16 inch (0.5626 inch decimal) in diameter with a 135-degree split-point geometry and a multi-layer TiAlCr/TiSi proprietary coating. The overall length is 6.0236 inches, with a flute length of 3.5039 inches and a straight cylindrical shank diameter of 0.5937 inches. Belonging to the MDW-GS series, this drill is built for productivity in demanding production environments where tool life and hole quality in ferrous materials are critical. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the typical end users.
This drill is engineered primarily for cutting steel, stainless steel, and hardened materials. The 4xD flute-to-diameter ratio and tapered web configuration make it well suited for through-hole and blind-hole drilling in CNC machining centers and drill presses. It does not feature coolant-through capability, so external flood coolant or mist systems are recommended when running at high feed rates in difficult alloys. The MDW-GS series targets production-volume shops requiring consistent performance across tool changes without coolant-through infrastructure.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and similar machine tool setups where a straight-shank jobber drill in the 0.5000 to 0.6500 inch diameter range is specified. Primary workpiece material codes K and P indicate suitability for steel and stainless steel families per ISO material classification.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Secure the shank fully in a properly sized ER collet or drill chuck and verify runout before production use, as excessive runout accelerates carbide chipping. Because this drill does not have coolant-through capability, apply adequate external coolant or cutting fluid to manage heat at the cutting zone. Avoid hand-feeding at inconsistent rates; program feed and speed parameters appropriate for the workpiece material and machine spindle to prevent premature tool failure.
