The SUMITOMO U101156 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance metal cutting in demanding production environments. It measures 10.08 mm (0.3970 inches) in diameter with an overall length of 4.4882 inches and a flute length of 2.5984 inches. The bit carries a dual TiAlCr and TiSi coating that extends tool life by resisting heat and wear at elevated cutting speeds. The 135-degree split point reduces thrust force and improves entry accuracy without a center punch. This drill is intended for use by machinists and tool-and-die professionals running CNC machining centers or drill presses in metalworking applications.
The U101156 is rated for cutting cast iron and steel, covering primary workpiece material codes K and P. The MDW-GS series is built for 4xD depth-to-diameter ratio applications, making it well-suited for through-hole and blind-hole operations in general machining, automotive component production, and heavy fabrication shops. The straight-cylindrical shank at 7/16 inch (0.4375 inches) seats directly into standard drill chucks and collet holders without adapters in most setups. Coolant-through capability is not included on this model, so external flood or mist coolant delivery is recommended for heat management during extended cuts.
Designed for cutting cast iron and steel workpieces (material codes K and P). Fits standard drill chucks and collet systems accepting a 0.4375-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Part of the Sumitomo MDW-GS series, covering drill bit sizes in the 10.00 mm to 12.50 mm range (0.3500 to 0.4000 inches decimal).
Installation and tool changes must be performed with the machine fully powered down and spindle locked. Secure the shank fully into the chuck or collet holder to the recommended grip depth before torquing the retention mechanism. Use external flood or mist coolant directed at the cutting zone, as this model does not support coolant-through delivery. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or coating wear before each use; solid carbide tooling is brittle and should not be dropped or struck against hard surfaces.
