The SUMITOMO U101106 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in ferrous materials. Built to MDW-GS series specifications, it features a 135-degree split point, a straight-cylindrical shank, and a tapered web configuration that improves chip evacuation and reduces thrust force at entry. At 0.302 inches (7.67 mm) in diameter with an overall length of 3.0709 inches, this bit is compact enough for stub-length drilling applications where rigidity and positional accuracy matter. The coated carbide construction extends tool life when working in abrasive or hard materials. Machinists, toolroom technicians, and production floor operators are the primary users.
This drill bit is suited for drilling operations in cast iron and steel workpieces where a short, stiff tool path is required. The screw machine length format reduces deflection and is commonly used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual lathes when hole depth is limited and precision entry is critical. With a maximum drilling depth of 0.9644 inches (24.50 mm) and a 2xD flute-to-diameter ratio, it is optimized for shallow-to-moderate depth holes. It does not include coolant-through capability, making it best suited for applications where external coolant or dry cutting is used.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use drill bit within the SUMITOMO MDW-GS series, compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks and collet holders accepting a 0.302 inch diameter shank. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron and steel.
Installation and operation should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel familiar with cutting tool safety practices. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is locked out before inserting or removing the bit from the chuck or collet. Verify chuck or collet runout before use, as excessive runout accelerates carbide tool wear and increases the risk of breakage. Do not exceed the maximum drilling depth of 0.9644 inches per pass without retracting to clear chips.
