The SUMITOMO U101040 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-precision drilling in metalworking applications. With a 0.182 inch (4.62 mm) diameter and a 135-degree split-point angle, this bit delivers accurate starts without center-punching on most materials. The two-flute, tapered-web construction evacuates chips efficiently and maintains rigidity in short-length drilling setups. At 2.4016 inches overall length with a 0.9843 inch flute length, the compact screw machine format fits standard drill chucks and CNC turret setups. Diameter tolerance is held to h8, making it suitable for close-tolerance bore work. This bit does not support coolant-through delivery.
The U101040 is intended for drilling cast iron and steel in production and job-shop environments. Its screw machine length profile makes it well-suited for turret lathes, CNC machining centers, and drill presses where rigidity and minimal overhang are required. The straight-cylindrical shank accepts standard collets and drill chucks without modification. Maximum drilling depth is 0.7114 inches (18.07 mm), consistent with the 2xD flute-by-diameter ratio of the MDW-GS series. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals working with ferrous materials will find this bit performs reliably across repetitive drilling cycles.
Designed for use with cast iron and steel workpieces. The straight-cylindrical shank is compatible with standard collet systems and drill chucks sized for 0.182 inch shanks. Part of the Sumitomo MDW-GS series.
Installation and setup should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before inserting or removing the bit from the chuck or collet. Verify runout and chuck concentricity before beginning a drilling cycle to protect the carbide cutting edge. Carbide tooling is brittle and should not be dropped or subjected to lateral impact loads.
