The SUMITOMO U101023 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit designed for high-precision drilling in demanding metalworking applications. It features a 0.147 inch (3.73 mm) diameter, a 135-degree split point angle, and a straight-cylindrical shank. The two-flute, tapered-web geometry provides stable chip evacuation and accurate hole entry without a center punch. With an overall length of 2.126 inches and a flute length of 0.8268 inches, this bit is built for short, rigid setups common in production drilling environments. It carries an h8 diameter tolerance, making it suitable for close-tolerance work. Machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary users.
This drill bit is suited for drilling cast iron and steel in screw machine, turret lathe, and CNC machining center applications. The screw machine length designation means a shorter overall profile compared to jobber-length bits, which improves rigidity and reduces deflection in high-feed drilling cycles. The MDW-GS series targets production environments where consistent hole quality and tool life across multiple cycles are priorities. Maximum drilling depth is 0.6065 inches (15.41 mm). No coolant-through capability is present, so external coolant or cutting fluid should be applied at the workpiece.
Designed as a screw machine length replacement drill bit for use in cast iron and steel applications within the MDW-GS series, fitting standard drill chucks and collets that accept a straight-cylindrical shank at 0.147 inches diameter.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with CNC or manual machine operation. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet to the recommended grip depth before operation. Since this bit does not include coolant-through capability, apply external cutting fluid or coolant directly to the cutting zone to manage heat and chip evacuation. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping between operations to maintain hole quality and prevent tool breakage.
