The SUMITOMO 5VHY409 is a screw machine length solid carbide drill bit designed for high-precision, short-hole drilling in demanding metal-cutting applications. It measures 1.50 mm (0.0591 inches) in diameter with a 135-degree drill point angle, a straight-cylindrical shank, and a maximum drilling depth of 0.3189 inches. The two-flute, coated carbide construction supports coolant-through capability, helping to clear chips and manage heat during deep or high-cycle drilling operations. Machinists and tool-and-die technicians working on CNC and screw machine setups will find this bit suited for tight-tolerance production work where consistent hole quality is required.
This drill bit is engineered for use in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. The screw machine length format — shorter overall length than jobber bits — provides increased rigidity, which reduces deflection and improves hole location accuracy in production environments. With an overall length of 2.4803 inches and a flute length of 0.3937 inches, it fits standard toolholders accepting a 3.00 mm (0.1181 inch) straight-cylindrical shank. The MDW-HGS series designation indicates a tapered web configuration with a single margin, optimized for hole-entry stability in hard and abrasive materials.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers, screw machines, and drill presses accepting a 3.00 mm straight-cylindrical shank. Rated for primary workpiece materials of cast iron, stainless steel, and steel. Part of the SUMITOMO MDW-HGS series.
Installation and setup should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with carbide tooling. Ensure the tool holder and collet are clean and true before seating the shank to avoid runout. Confirm that coolant-through supply is active before beginning the drilling cycle, as dry running can damage the carbide substrate. Handle carbide drill bits with care — they are brittle and can chip if dropped or impacted against hard surfaces.
