The SUMITOMO 5VHY224 is a solid carbide jobber-length drill bit designed for high-performance metal cutting in demanding machining environments. It carries a dual TiAlCr and TiSi coating that improves wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The drill features a 135-degree split point, a 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio, and a tapered web configuration. At 11.2 mm in diameter with a 158 mm overall length, this bit is suited for production drilling where tool life and hole quality are the primary concerns. It is installed and operated by machinists and CNC programmers working with metalworking lathes, machining centers, and drill presses.
This drill bit is engineered for cutting cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel, covering workpiece material codes K, M, P, and S. The through-coolant capability makes it appropriate for deep-hole applications and high-speed production runs where heat management is critical. The straight-cylindrical shank seats directly into standard drill chucks and collet holders without modification. It belongs to the MDW-HGS series, which is optimized for aggressive metal removal in industrial shop environments.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and drill presses equipped with standard collet or chuck toolholding systems that accept a 12 mm straight-cylindrical shank. Suitable for primary workpiece materials including cast iron, stainless steel, and steel (material codes K, M, P, and S) within the 10.00 mm to 12.50 mm drill bit size range of the MDW-HGS series.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard toolholding procedures for solid carbide drills. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is clean and free of debris before seating the shank. Solid carbide tooling is brittle and must not be subjected to side loads or interrupted cuts outside the tool's rated parameters. Confirm through-coolant pressure and flow rate are within the machine and tool specifications before beginning a drilling operation.
