The SUMITOMO 5VHY222 is a solid carbide jobber length drill bit engineered for high-performance metal cutting in demanding production and maintenance environments. The drill features a 135-degree split point, an 11 mm diameter, and a TiAlCr and TiSi dual-coating system designed to reduce heat buildup and extend tool life in hard and abrasive materials. At 149 mm overall length with an 88 mm flute length, this bit falls within the MDW-HGS series and is built to a 5xD flute-by-diameter ratio. Coolant-through capability allows for effective chip evacuation and thermal management during deep-hole operations. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die technicians are the primary installers of this tooling.
This drill bit is intended for metal cutting applications in shop, production floor, and field machining environments. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron, stainless steel, and general steel, corresponding to ISO material codes K, M, P, and S. The straight-cylindrical shank allows direct mounting in standard drill chucks and collet systems without adapters. It is well suited to CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual lathes where consistent hole quality and tight tolerances are required. The h8 diameter tolerance on the shank ensures reliable runout performance in precision toolholding systems.
Designed for use in drill bit size range 10 mm to 12.5 mm (0.4000 to 0.5000 decimal inch) toolholding systems. Part of the Sumitomo MDW-HGS series and compatible with standard straight-shank drill chucks, ER collet systems, and hydraulic toolholders accepting an 11 mm shank diameter.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine in a full stop and lockout-tagout procedures followed per OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147. Confirm shank seating depth and runout with a dial indicator before beginning a production run. Do not exceed the tooling manufacturer recommended feed and speed parameters for the workpiece material, as solid carbide is brittle and susceptible to fracture under shock loading or excessive deflection. Ensure coolant lines are clear and delivering adequate flow before engaging the cut when using the through-coolant feature.
