The SUMITOMO 5VHY084 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in demanding metalworking applications. It carries a 10.80 mm (0.4252 inch) diameter with a 135-degree web-thinned point that reduces entry force and improves centering accuracy. The DEX multi-layer coating extends tool life in abrasive and heat-intensive materials. At 116.00 mm overall length with a 55.00 mm flute length, this is a stub-format bit designed for rigid setups where tool deflection and runout must be minimized. A licensed machinist or tool-and-die technician is the typical installer in CNC or manual drilling operations.
The 5VHY084 is suited for drilling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and high-temperature alloys in production machining environments. The coolant-through design channels cutting fluid directly to the cutting edge, making it effective for deep-hole passes up to 41.00 mm (1.6142 inches) at 3xD depth-to-diameter ratio. The straight cylindrical shank measures 11.00 mm in diameter and 61.00 mm in length, fitting standard drill chucks and collet holders used in vertical machining centers, drill presses, and CNC turning centers.
Part of the SUMITOMO MDW-HGS series. Designed for use in standard straight-shank drill chucks and collet holders accepting an 11.00 mm shank. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and high-temperature alloys as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop safety protocols. Confirm spindle speed, feed rate, and coolant flow settings match the workpiece material and machine specifications before operation. Secure the shank fully in the chuck or collet to the recommended engagement depth before applying any cutting load. Inspect the cutting edges and coating for wear or chipping before each use, as a damaged carbide bit can fracture under load.
