The SUMITOMO 5VHY071 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding production environments. Built from solid carbide, it delivers the rigidity and wear resistance needed when drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel. The bit features a 135-degree split point, a 9.50 mm diameter, and a tapered web configuration that promotes chip evacuation and reduces walking on entry. Coolant-through capability supports high-speed machining operations where heat management is critical. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals specify this series when cycle time and hole quality both matter.
The 5VHY071 belongs to SUMITOMO's MDW-HGS series and is sized for screw machine length applications — a shorter, stiffer geometry suited to CNC machining centers, lathes with live tooling, and production drilling fixtures. Primary workpiece materials include cast iron, stainless steel, and steel. The straight-cylindrical shank fits standard ER and drill chuck toolholding. Maximum drilling depth is 35.30 mm, keeping the application squarely in the short-hole drilling category where rigidity and positional accuracy are priorities.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers and production drilling equipment accepting a straight-cylindrical shank with a 10.00 mm shank diameter. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron, stainless steel, and steel. Part of the MDW-HGS series, which covers the 9.50 mm to 11.00 mm diameter range.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists following standard toolholding procedures for straight-shank drills. Ensure the spindle and toolholder are clean and free of chips before seating the shank. Confirm coolant-through passages in the toolholder are aligned and open before running the spindle. Follow machine manufacturer torque specifications for the chuck or collet nut — do not overtighten, as solid carbide shanks are brittle under radial clamp loads.
