The SUMITOMO 5VHY039 is a screw machine length solid carbide drill bit designed for high-performance drilling in demanding metalworking applications. Built to Series MDW-HGS specifications, it features a 6.30 mm (0.2480 inch) diameter with a 135-degree web-thinned point that reduces thrust and improves centering on entry. The DEX multi-layer proprietary coating extends tool life in abrasive and heat-generating cuts. Overall length is 88.00 mm (3.46 inches) with a 7.00 mm straight cylindrical shank, making it compatible with standard drill chucks and collet systems. This bit is intended for use by machinists and toolroom professionals in CNC and manual drilling operations.
The 5VHY039 is suited for drilling steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and high-temperature alloys in production and job-shop environments. Its screw machine length body provides increased rigidity compared to jobber-length bits, reducing deflection in short-reach setups on machining centers, drill presses, and lathes with live tooling. The 3xD flute-to-diameter ratio and tapered web configuration support chip evacuation in interrupted and continuous cuts. Coolant-through capability allows internal coolant delivery directly to the cutting zone, extending tool life in high-speed production runs.
Designed for use in steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and high-temperature alloy workpieces. Fits standard drill chucks and collet holders accepting a 7.00 mm straight cylindrical shank. Part of the SUMITOMO MDW-HGS series for screw machine length carbide drilling.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists familiar with CNC or manual drilling equipment. Ensure the shank is fully seated and securely clamped in the tool holder before operation, and verify spindle speed and feed rate are set per the machine shop's tooling guidelines for carbide drills in the target material. When using coolant-through capability, confirm that internal coolant channels are clear and supply pressure is adequate before initiating the cut. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use, as carbide tooling can fail suddenly if run on worn edges.
