The SUMITOMO 5VHY018 is a solid carbide screw machine length drill bit engineered for high-performance drilling in demanding metalworking applications. It carries a 4.20 mm (0.1654 inch) diameter with a 135-degree split-point tip geometry and a tapered web configuration for improved chip evacuation and reduced thrust. The straight-cylindrical shank measures 5.00 mm in diameter and 2.0866 inches in length, fitting standard drill chucks and collet holders. Coolant-through capability supports internal flood or mist cooling during high-speed operations. This bit is designed for use by machinists and CNC operators working in production and job-shop environments.
The 5VHY018 is suited for drilling cast iron, stainless steel, and steel in screw machine, CNC lathe, and machining center setups. The screw machine length design provides a shorter, more rigid profile compared to jobber-length bits, reducing deflection during entry and improving positional accuracy in tight-tolerance work. The MDW-HGS series designation indicates a high-geometry, coated carbide design optimized for interrupted cuts and work-hardening alloys common in production machining. Maximum drilling depth is 0.7717 inches (19.60 mm), suited for shallow-to-moderate depth holes in the primary workpiece materials listed.

Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle at a complete stop and machine power locked out. Ensure the shank is fully seated and the collet or chuck is torqued to the toolholder specification before cycling the machine. Verify coolant-through passages are clear and supply pressure is adequate before engaging the cut. Do not exceed the maximum drilling depth of 0.7717 inches without a peck-drilling cycle to clear chips.
